Sympathetic vs Parasympathetic

autonomic

“Fight or Flight” vs “Rest and Digest”. For the most part these are pretty obvious reactions, but I still think there are importance concepts to have. I have this nifty chart below highlighting most the prominent structures with their corresponding functions and then a few links to websites that I think do a good job of further explaining things into more detail for those of you who like details.

Organ Sympathetic Function Parasympathetic Function
Eye Dilates pupil Contracts pupil
Heart Increases rate and force of contraction Decreases rate and force of contraction
Lungs Dilates bronchioles Constricts bronchioles
GI Sphinters Contracts Relaxes
Digestive tract Inhibits peristalsis Stimulates motility and secreation

Oral/Nasal Mucosa Mucus production reduced Mucus production increased
