Married…With Children…in PT School!

CIMG7930

We are a minority, the few of us who are married with children and currently attending professional school. In our class, there are three of us who fit this category. I have been married almost 5 years, and we have two kids. I wonder sometimes how it is possible to continue to do well in school when there is so much going on at home. Just to give you an idea, here is what my typical day looks like:

5:45 AM- I wake up, wondering “Is that Luke I hear?”

6:00 AM- Suspicion confirmed. Luke enters our bedroom proclaiming that he is awake and ready for breakfast.

6:02 AM- Natalie also decides she doesn’t want to miss any of the fun.

6:30 AM- Shower

7:15 AM- Leave for School

8:00-4:00 PM-Classes and work

4:30-8:00 PM-Home. Being a daddy and husband.

8:00 PM- Kiddos bed time. My study time (or American Idol time)

10:30 PM- My Bed time. My brain no-longer works after this hour.

Random Hours in the Night- I wake up, wondering “Is that Luke or Natalie I hear?”

As you can see, there is only a couple hours (maybe) where I might study outside of the classroom, and to be honest, by the time it gets to be 8:00 PM I am bushed and ready for bed already, so I am not very productive. On the weekends, often we are busy doing things as a family, so again there is not much school stuff happening.

So, how do I do it? Pretty simple, really. I married the right person. My wife makes sure I get the time I need to study if I really need to. She takes the kids to grandmas, she takes them to the zoo. She gets up in the night with the kids. She understands the rigors of professional school, and supports me 100%.

I’m sure the other marrieds in the class would agree. We couldn’t do this without our significant others! Thank you!
